On a damp early October morning 22 members and spouses met at The Compasses Inn in Gomshall at 10:00am.

Ford across River Tillingbourne

After coffee and placing orders for lunch the group set off along the road and footpath towards Shere. By then the weather was much improved and it remained dry for the rest of the morning.

The Anchoress's Cell

She lived there from 1329 to her death in 1333

When we arrived at the church, James took us to see the plaque, commemorating the cell of Christina Carpenter (the Anchoress of Shere in the 14th Century), on the outside of the north wall.

The group then split with those doing a shorter walk visiting Shere for a while before retracing their steps to the pub in Gomshall.

The remaining group of 16, doing the longer walk, followed an anticlockwise circular route by going along the river Tillingbourne and then into the Surrey Hills National Landscape returning to The Compasses Inn just after 12:30pm.
