The Probus Club of Horsham Arun Forest

ABOUT

Our Club

The prime aim of our Club is to be a friendly organisation that offers fellowship to all our members. All members and their partners are encouraged to be involved in the club's activities and events.

The Club is organised and run by a committee of members who provide administration, planning and direction of the activities, though the full membership has the ultimate say in what is done.

We have a strong welfare ethos within the club and provide help and assistance to members during times of difficulty or illness. This applies particularly to our honorary ladies who are on their own.

Monthly Meetings

Our Club Meetings are held as social gatherings, to run the club's business and to hear from a speaker. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10:00 am at the Horsham Sports Club. The meeting room overlooks the Horsham cricket pitch which is an attractive venue.

The meeting normally consists of the business element which lasts an hour, followed by a coffee break and a talk by an invited speaker. We have an eclectic mix of speakers with such subjects as: life in a submarine, iron production in the weald area and lexicography. We also have talks from our own members on a wide range of subjects based on their working lives.

Following the meeting and speaker, lunch is enjoyed at the same venue, Horsham Sports Club.

History

The Probus Club of Horsham Arun Forest was formed on the 1st April, 2024 as a result of a merger between The Probus Club of Horsham Arun and The Probus Club of Horsham Forest.

The Probus Club of Horsham Forest was established in 1989 with a maximum membership of 50. In those days many Probus Clubs operated a waiting list and some people had to for wait up to three years before being invited to join.

As a result of this, The Probus Club of Horsham Arun was formed in 1991 with a maximum membership of 55.

Bowls

The club plays bowls on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Horsham Indoor Bowls Club next to The Bridge Leisure Centre at Broadbridge Heath.

We meet at 09.15 and play usually up to about mid-day – with a social coffee break at about the mid point of the session.

To protect the carpet, flat soled shoes, or thick socks, must be worn; club bowling woods are available for hire.

All player standards are welcome – from beginners / learners to experienced players – for what is a friendly, social and gently competitive session.

Bridge

We have an active bridge section comprising members, their partners and our Honorary Ladies. We play a league during the winter months by individual arrangement between pairs, either online or face to face.

At the end of our winter league we try to get together as a group when we play a type of competitive but friendly bridge and enjoy afternoon tea together.

Players of all ability are very welcome, especially those with culinary skills!

Coffee Morning

Club members get together for coffee, biscuits and gossip – and if we have been very good perhaps a slice of cake – on the fourth Thursday of each month at 10.30 at St Marks Church Hall on Horsham's North Heath Lane.

That is in the winter months but, in the summer months, members hold the coffee mornings in their gardens.

After coffee, some members adjourn to the Sussex Barn pub, just across the road, for their 'seniors special' lunches.

Golf

Golf is played most weeks at Cottesmore Golf Club on Tuesday mornings, weather and course conditions permitting.

Pétanque

The club plays Pétanque – or Boules – at the Horsham and Shipley Community Project located off the A272, on the right between the Shipley Road and Dragons Lane turns.

We have two sessions each year in July & August and play usually starts at 10am and concludes around 12.30pm. Horsham & Shipley Community Project (HSCP) provide the boules and refreshments of hot drinks & cakes at the end of the session inclusive of the cost.

We welcome players of all abilities and there is a trophy for both the ladies & gents for 'best player' across both sessions- as judged by the HSCP team.

Pickleball

The club plays on Tuesdays generally in the latter half of every month from 14:00 - 16:00 at Holbrook Club in Horsham.

All Pickleball bats and balls are supplied free of charge but there is a fee for the use of the court.

All player standards are welcome from beginners to the experienced player. Ladies are particularly welcome. It is a friendly, social, rather funny at times and gently competitive activity.

MEMBERS' PUB LUNCH

Members meet twice a month at the Dog and Bacon pub on Horsham's North Parade.

The Dog and Bacon is under new ownership and has made the Club members feel very much 'at home' with their fine pub food and selection of beers and wines.

These lunches are an opportunity for wide ranging discussions and debates amongst friends – from physics to politics and ethics to engineering, no subject is 'off the table'.

All Members are welcome, just let the organiser know and turn up at about noon.

Skittles

At The Bull Inn, Shermanbury

On the third Tuesday of the Spring, Autumn and Winter months, the Club members and their ladies meet for traditional Nine Pin Skittles at the Bull Inn.

There are teams, but everyone is welcome and assured of a game? We start at 11 a.m. for coffee and order lunch, before play starts from 11:30 a.m. onwards. In August there is a special event where it's a bit more serious as the gents challenge the ladies.

Walks

Walk more, live longer, worry less and enjoy the company of like minds!

Why not enjoy the fresh air and join us for sociable countryside walks in Sussex and Surrey, perhaps visiting places that are unfamiliar to you? The Club offers a varied programme of guided walks throughout the year, catering for all levels of ability.

Good company is guaranteed for your walk.

All you have to do is sign up, turn up, join the walk and afterwards adjourn to the pub for a well-earned lunch.
