The visit was organised by Bob of The Probus Club of Horsham - Shelley.

Five of us from our club attended, together with nine from Horsham - Shelley.

It was an excellent visit where we saw a rolling road test facility, an emissions testing unit, and an anechoic chamber for testing vehicle noise emissions.

Ricardo is also building and developing hydrogen fuel cell based units to provide electricity to power large ships.

We were also shown a marine engine testing facility. These were large engines for cruise ships, one being run on standard diesel the other on methanol. All of this facility was fully instrumented to measure power and emissions etc.

Finally we were taken to the McLaren engine building facility. Here they build all the McLaren sports car engines which is around 70 per year.

In the car park outside we were show a double decker bus which derived its power from a hydrogen fuel cell. This was built some years ago and has not run for a while.

All in all it was an excellent visit especially for the engineers amongst us.

Special thanks to our guides, the two Richard’s.
